Cognitive Hypnotherapy

What is Cognitive Hypnotherapy?

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a modern and flexible therapy that puts the client and their world at the centre. It does not advocate a ‘one size fits all’ solution to any of life’s problems. Instead, I use a range of techniques drawn from different disciplines that have been found to be the most effective tools for change so far.

Many people have been given, or have identified, a label for their problem, anxiety, for example.  Labels can be really helpful in explaining to people how you feel and what you are dealing with, and perhaps comforting that you're not the only one feeling the way you do.  However, I'm interested in exactly how that problem feels for you, how it impacts your life, how you experience it.  When we've explored that, we can then explore the root of that problem and think about how you would like to feel instead.

You are unique.  Your problem is unique.  Your solution will be unique.

This is not traditional hypnotherapy. There are no scripts, and I don’t treat the label, I utilise the uniqueness of each person. In a sense, your life experiences have hypnotised you into believing certain things about you that don’t serve you.  I can help to de-hypnotise you so you can believe what you choose to. You don’t have to believe your past is your destiny. By rewriting your story, you can choose who you want to be.

It's important to know that we are in this together.  I have training and experience that makes me the guide, if you will, but I'm not the expert on you.

You are the expert on you.

You already have everything within you that you need to make the changes you are looking for and more.  I am here to use Cognitive Hypnotherapy, and the tools it gives me, to help you get there.

Research

Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy (QCH) launched a unique research project in 2011. Using a team of QCH therapists, clients with anxiety and depression were assessed using the same outcome measures currently used to assess the effectiveness of talking therapies within the NHS. The pilot study was published in the Mental Health Review Journal in 2015.

It recorded that, using 118 cases measuring the effectiveness of Cognitive Hypnotherapy for the treatment of depression and anxiety, 71% considered themselves recovered after an average of 4 sessions. This compared to an average of 42% for other approaches using the same measures (like CBT). To our knowledge, this is the only hypnotherapy approach to have been validated in this way.

Further information concerning the research project and pilot study released in the Mental Health Review Journal can be found here.
